I’m A Girl in the Wilderness

I’m an adventure loving, mountain obsessed twenty-something year old girl.

Just like everyone else, I am trying to make it through life doing as much of the things that I love as possible.

Just Another Travel Blog?

Together with my boyfriend, Tom, I am trying to experience as much of the world as I can. Mountains are my passion, so mountaineering is my priority. However, I also love rock climbing, scuba diving, kayaking, hiking, camping, snowboarding, off-roading, travel and exploration! This blog exists to chronicle our travels and adventures, offering tips, tales, reviews (and probably rants) along the way.

I am writing this for those who want to get into adventure sports but don’t know how, those who already are involved recreationally or professionally and want useful tips/tricks/ideas and those who have no intention of getting into anything extreme but want to learn more and get their thrills vicariously (or maybe those who are just interested in having a laugh at my many, many misfortunes along the way!).

My Story

When I was 12 years old, I made a plan for my ‘ideal weekend’, including some of my favourite activities.

Aoife's Ideal Weekend (2006)
12 year old Aoife’s ideal weekend. One of my younger siblings kindly decided to ‘illustrate’ this for me…

Little Aoife was clearly a budding adventuress; wanting to explore, camp and climb (and get very dirty!). But as I got older, this adventurous streak was smothered and repressed. I became consumed with trying to fit in with my peers and ‘succeed’ in life. I only re-discovered this sense of adventure when I hit adulthood and finally felt comfortable being myself.

My love for the mountains stemmed from a white-water kayaking trip in the Highlands of Scotland. My mind was blown. I had never been anywhere so enchantingly beautiful. As a typical fresher used to a sedentary university lifestyle, getting myself up even small peaks was hard work but the views at the top more than made up for the struggle.

Soon after this, I signed up to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro – which is how I met Tom! From there on, we began to tackle more exciting routes and summits together and I became completely addicted to the mountains.

What Took You So Long?!

For a long time, a crippling lack of confidence has stopped me from chronicling our adventures… What if no one reads it? What if I sound stupid/arrogant/spoilt/inexperienced? Why would anyone care about my life or what I have to say?

But I have decided that it doesn’t matter how much traffic I get. This blog can simultaneously serve as a way for friends, family and interested parties to keep up-to-date with our adventures, and as a way for me to diary our adventures for my own enjoyment whilst giving my own worries and lack of confidence the middle finger.
